A soundscape is an acoustic fingerprint, it tells the story of an environment in whole. The soundscape holds information about the biophony, geophony, and anthrophony of the area.

As Colgate university expands up the hill with new dorm buildings and more students and faculty coming to Colgate the soundscapes can tell how these changes the level of bird richness and abundance due to changes in habitat and food resources. The richness and abundance of various species speaks to the health of a forest. These aspects can be measured and seen through recordings of soundscapes and individual birds. Various species rely on different aspects of the forest and if changes due to human activity or climate change affect the bird population, there will be a noticeable change in the soundscape and individual birds recorded.

Inspiration for Project

The video above is a TedTalk given by Bernie Krause in June of 2013. Bernie Krause is the father of soundscape ecology. His more than 30 years in the field has lead to the insight of how various types of human activities affect the unseen environment. The sounds collected can provide information on the abundance and variety of species in an area.
